Improving Transportation for Southeast Alaska
The Alaska Marine Highway is Southeast Alaska’s primary transportation infrastructure and highway system. However, it is currently strained due to the ongoing budget deficit. Budgetary constraints aside, residents are dependent upon this transportation system, and I am committed to focusing the Alaskan legislature on the needs of those residents.
I have continuously voted NOT to cut funding to this vital service. During our most recent session, I was even able to fight for increased funding by $20 million. The ferry system plans to add the equivalent of 8 more weeks of service this year.
If re-elected, I will also look into HB 412 - making the AMHS an Independent Authority entity similar to the Alaska Railroad, which is a public corporation owned by the residents of Alaska. Southeast Conference originally introduced this idea, and I'm excited to dig more deeply into it's potential.
